Introduction to Rewilding at Mapperton

Tour details

Join us at the beginning of our rewilding journey at Mapperton, as natural processes are allowed to shape the future landscape as part of our efforts to support biodiversity and ecosystem recovery.  As well as leaving the land alone in the rewilding areas, more environmentally-friendly farming and land management regimes are gradually being implemented across the estate.

During this morning walk we will describe the project work underway and explore an extensive area of grassland, marsh and scrub at the very beginning of this journey.  We will also track down the magnificent herd of White Park cattle, one of England oldest native breeds.

MAY Highlights

Snipe & Jack Snipe in the marshes; Siskin and Redpoll feeding on Alder catkins in boggy woodland areas; Roe and Fallow Deer grazing the woodland edges or resting in Bracken. Spring is advancing, with Primrose, Barren Strawberry and others flowers starting to bloom and Marsh Tits singing.

Gavin Haig

Gavin is a lifelong natural history enthusiast with a special interest in birds. He spent several years as a bird recorder for the London Natural History Society through the 1980s and ’90s and more recently, he spent five years on the Devon Birds Records Committee. Gavid launched and helped run the Devon Birds News Blog, until it was adopted into the newly created Devon Birds website several years later. Relocting from East Devon to Bridport in 2015, Gavin has been actively involved with many local groups concerned with the conservation and observation of birds, plants and wildlife. He can often be found birdwatching locally and on the nearby coast, as well as being involved in the rewilding project here at Mapperton.

Unfortunately we cannot offer a refund or alternative date for your Wildlands booking unless the weather forces cancellation. We also cannot guarantee the weather, or that you will see your target species. Nature can unpredictable, despite our best efforts! However there’s always plenty of wildlife to see.
