Self-Guided Wildlands Safari

As well as offering guided safaris through Mapperton Wildlands, we want to give our visitors the opportunity to explore our Wildlands at their own pace and at a time that suits them.

Tickets for the Self-Guided Wildlands Safari allow you to trek through the Wildlands with the help of our ‘Safari Trail Guide’. This will help you interpret your natural surroundings, understanding how rewilding supports wildlife regeneration, while enjoying the sensory experience that comes with making connections with nature.

Mapperton’s Self-Guided Wildlands Safari is approximately 4 miles and will take around 2½ to 3 hours to walk. The first part is relatively level with a stretch of road walking, before a fairly steep road climb for about a 1/3 of a mile to Coltleigh Hill House. The rest of the trail is a circular route across the rough ground of the Wildlands, which can be boggy in places, depending on the season. The trail is classed as moderate, navigating over uneven ground with some inclines requiring suitable walking boots to be worn.

There is a charge for this Self-Guided Wildlands Safari which helps us to maintain the trail and support the Rewilding Project. Tickets can be purchased online or at the Coach House café. If purchasing tickets online, please collect your Safari Trail Guide (and Children’s Trail) at the café.

Your ticket gives you permission to access Mapperton’s Wildlands Safari on the date purchased, and includes your ‘Safari Trail Guide’ plus a children’s trail for younger members of your trekking team.

Please note NO dogs are allowed on this route as our livestock are free to roam.

Trekkers must keep to the designated pathways as indicated by the trail markers and mown tracks. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

If you suffer from allergies (e.g. hayfever, stings) please take appropriate precautions and carry your own medication as required.

Please note, tickets for the House Tour, entry to the Gardens and the self-guided safari are not to purchase online. Instead, please book onto one of the house tours, and let us know when you get here that you would like to upgrade your ticket with the self-guided safari tour.
